Metsähallitus, Finland
Metsähallitus is a state enterprise operating within the
administrative sector of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Metsähallitus administers the state's land and water areas
including most of the natural parks and other protected areas:
9 million hectares of land and 3,4 million hectares of lakes and
waterways, about one third of Finland's total area. Most of the
areas are situated in Eastern and Northern Finland.
Over 90 % of annual turnover is generated by timber sales. In
addition to business operations, Metsähallitus has social
and public authority duties financed by the State. Managing infrastructure
of protected and recreational areas is one of them. In matters
relating to nature protection, Metsähallitus works under
the Ministry of Environment.
Metsähallitus engages in active cooperation with the corresponding
authorities for protected area management in Russia, Estonia,
Sweden and Norway. Metsähallitus has also participated numerous
international projects for nature conservation and recreational
use of protected areas, financed by several funds of European
Union.
