NUNAVUT TOURISM, Canada

Nunavut Tourism was established in 1996 upon dissolution of three regional associations. It has a nine-member board, a staff of 16, and more than 100 industry members. Nunavut Tourism has primary responsibility for tourism development, tourism training and marketing on behalf of Nunavut. The organization works with a number of partners in tourism development such as the Government of Nunavut, Parks Canada and Inuit Lands Claim organizations. As well, Nunavut Tourism cooperates with other tourism agencies such as NWT Arctic Tourism, Tourism Yukon, Canadian Tourism Commission and Travel Manitoba in regional marketing initiatives.

Vision
An environmentally responsible and economically viable tourism industry, characterized by professional delivery, and operating in harmony with Nunavut culture and tradition.

Mission Statement
Nunavut Tourism is a not-for-profit membership association which encourages tourism development, by providing specialized knowledge and expertise in five key areas: marketing, research, industry development, training, and visitor services.

Nunavut Tourism seeks partnerships with governments, Inuit associations, communities, and tourism operators in order to exploit those tourism opportunities which offer a means of sustainable economic growth, cultural preservation, and social benefits for the people of Nunavut.

Encourage investment in, and expansion of, the Nunavut tourism industry appropriate to the size of identified tourism market sectors, and in accordance with the level of tourism acceptable and appropriate to each Nunavut community
Educate the Nunavut public and political leadership regarding the cultural, social, environmental and economic benefits of a healthy Nunavut tourism industry
Serve as the representative voice of the Nunavut’s tourism industry in bringing issues and concerns to the attention of the political decision-makers.
Sustainable Model for Arctic Region Tourism (SMART PROJECT)

Nunavut Tourism, along with the Northwest Territories, was invited to participate in this circumpolar project on behalf of Canada. A representative from each of the two Territories attended a project planning session in Tornio, Finland, with financial assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. With on-going support from the federal government, Nunavut Tourism has continued full involvement in the SMART project, and has taken on responsibility for coordinating Work Packet 3: Development of training curricula in Arctic sustainable tourism based upon the six SMART principles.
