WWF International Arctic Programme

Since 1992, WWF's International Arctic Programme has been working with our partners across the Arctic to preserve this region’s rich biodiversity in a sustainable way. In that context, WWF believes that tourism represents an opportunity and positive force to support the protection of the arctic environment. Tourism activities can be conducted responsibly so that visitors learn to appreciate and respect arctic nature and cultures, as well as provide an additional income to local communities and traditional lifestyles.
WWF has been working on arctic tourism issues and with industry, researchers, authorities and communities since 1995, and together with the State of Alaska and the Alaska Wilderness Recreation and Tourism Association laid the foundation for SMART.
