The Sustainable Arctic Tourism Association (SATA) was
founded in October 2005.
Most people who live in the arctic or visit it want it to
maintain its qualities. But for example it is as a traveller
hard to know the quality of one specific operator and the
nature of the region in advance of booking a trip. It is
also hard for an individual operator to define his or her
own quality. The Sustainable Arctic Tourism Association
(SATA) is an international association based in Sweden, and
we want to deal with this problem. The SATA wants to develop
contacts between tourism operators, travellers and nature
conservation interests in the Arctic.
The project SMART/link to project information/ also
mentioned in this website has created a number of principles
for sustainable tourism in the Arctic and a set of training
modules. They form the base for SATA and for the development
of a code of conduct or - in the future - a label for
sustainable arctic tourism. In Sweden, one of the
territories of the Arctic, there is already such a label.
The conditions in the countries that form the Arctic have a
lot in common, and the world already knows what the Arctic
is (in general, but not in detail). You might say the Arctic
is a well known trademark with no owner. This is an
important advantage for future tourism development. We in
SATA want to gather operators, organizations and individuals
to make Sustainable Arctic Tourism a sign of quality. Today
the members keep contact nationally and the board meets
mostly by phone, or over the web by iLink or Skype.
