TRAINING MODULE 4: RESPECTS AND INVOLVES LOCAL COMMUNITY


Objectives:

  • Training to meet the criteria of the Sustainable Arctic Tourism
  • Learn how to develop a community tourism business in a manner which is mutually-beneficial
  • Make use of human resources in the community where possible and appropriate
  • Remind tourism operators that the community is hosting their clients
  • Suggest ways of positive interaction between the business owners, visitors and residents


Outline:

  • Consulting the community in the business planning stage and during on-going business operations
  • Involving local businesses as part of the tourism operation by using local suppliers
  • Referring clients to local businesses for shopping and services
  • Finding creative and positive ways for visitors and residents to interact
  • Making use of local knowledge: wildlife, history, stories
  • Hiring locally
  • Providing and cooperating in training of local residents
  • Additional ways of contributing to the community
  • Seeking feedback from the community at the end-of-season
  • Involving community in tourism problem-solving
  • Informing community residents of the benefits of tourism to their community
